Do you simply use the pricking iron to punch all the way through or just mark the leather? Should i get a stitch chisel or the pricking irons do you think

I think it depends on how much you want to do awl work. Pricking will required that you develop the skills with the awl in hand. Once developed, you can have some beautiful stitches that are using a very traditional way of stitching leather. Punching all the way through is a little easier. I would encourage you to learn how to stich with the awl in hand as you will eventually need to do it on a piece where you cannot punch all the way through with a chisel.
