- How do you scratch proof your vegetan leather?En Help! How do I...19 November 2020Hi TC, This is also and issue with easily scratched leathers like Barenia or shiny croc. You just need to be very careful, or in the case of shiny croc you need to cover it with a plastic film to protect it. Some leathers you can just buff out minor scrapes or scratches, others you can't so you need to be careful. As for skiving there are a couple things you can do. One is to use a silicon tape to cover your skiver presser foot. This will let the leather slide through with less friction to the surface. Also, maybe more importantly, is dont try and skive off a lot of thickness at one time. If your leather is 2.5mm and you need to get it to 1mm on the edge, if you try to skive it all at once there is a lot of pressure and it will leave marks. Try skiving in stages. From 2.5 to 2.0, then 2.0 to 1.5 and then finally 1.5 to 1.0. good luck! p50

- how do you skive ostrich leather?En Help! How do I...29 January 2023Typically the ostrich needs to be prepared by removing as much of that fleshy stuff as possible. It can be done with a bell skiver, but I don't know how to tell you to do that. I just did it by hand and with a pair of nippers and a fabric shaver. Very tough and tedious work. Once you've done that, you'll end up with a skin that is about 0.8mm thick. It is usually, then, glued to another piece of leather to give it some structure. This is where the quills are tapped down while the glue (I would suggest PVA) is still wet. Once all dry, you can work with it more normally by skiving, lining etc.10
- Help! I've been trying to figure out how to make this zipped portfolio and I'm having a real hard time with two things.En Help! How do I...24 November 2020Thank you for the response Peter! I have to make them for an order for Dec. 1st, that's why I'm crying! Any tip at all? Before the tutorial comes?! 2-I will post a picture first thing tomorrow, hopefully it will make more sense. It might be because 1) the exterior leather and the leather lining might be too thick, combined it's about 3.2mm thick or 2) because of my first problem with zipper placement which leads to my exterior and my lining not being properly aligned...0
