Peter i would be very interested in a tutorial - i bought Ostrich 1 year ago and its laying on my shelves as i have no clue how to use it. I want to use it for the Birkenstock sandles (Tutorial). I think it would be very nice. so if you have the change - i think it would be a good topic. Although i prefer project tutorials … maybe 2 in 1 😊

Typically the ostrich needs to be prepared by removing as much of that fleshy stuff as possible. It can be done with a bell skiver, but I don't know how to tell you to do that. I just did it by hand and with a pair of nippers and a fabric shaver. Very tough and tedious work. Once you've done that, you'll end up with a skin that is about 0.8mm thick. It is usually, then, glued to another piece of leather to give it some structure. This is where the quills are tapped down while the glue (I would suggest PVA) is still wet. Once all dry, you can work with it more normally by skiving, lining etc.

Thank you for the response Peter! I have to make them for an order for Dec. 1st, that's why I'm crying! Any tip at all? Before the tutorial comes?! 2-I will post a picture first thing tomorrow, hopefully it will make more sense. It might be because 1) the exterior leather and the leather lining might be too thick, combined it's about 3.2mm thick or 2) because of my first problem with zipper placement which leads to my exterior and my lining not being properly aligned...

Got it. If I am thinking clearly, the holes on the flap will also be in opposite directions, much like when assembling the biker wallet. I assume simply not casting here too? Looking forward to try the needles and reporting back!! Thanks so much.

I think the tension of the feet roller needs to be very tight for this. I have the same problem to adjust it tight enough on my mashine, but that should help. Also from the ostrich you can take off the first layer of the really loose fibers by hand.

I try it. I have the samples. But it's a mess to buy small quantity as I know. In every case; I prefer leather as is a waste from the meat products.

both are from the same company and seems to be the same...not sure what the technical difference is. Would beed to ask them directly. Im using Vildona.

I forgot.. Exist also a vegan product made with apple waste. appleleather.com But... I'm not sure, but I think it's possible that are made with plastic materials too.

I think It's better to be able to control the speed of the knife and the speed of the feed roller separately. I don't think there is as much benefit to having a third motor for the grinding stone, even though it would be nice to have.

Hi Peter, where can I get salamander? Also what is Vildona. I is Bontex and bonded leather amongst a few other products as reinforcements.
