- How do you scratch proof your vegetan leather? In Help! How do I...19 November 2020Hi TC, This is also and issue with easily scratched leathers like Barenia or shiny croc. You just need to be very careful, or in the case of shiny croc you need to cover it with a plastic film to protect it. Some leathers you can just buff out minor scrapes or scratches, others you can't so you need to be careful. As for skiving there are a couple things you can do. One is to use a silicon tape to cover your skiver presser foot. This will let the leather slide through with less friction to the surface. Also, maybe more importantly, is dont try and skive off a lot of thickness at one time. If your leather is 2.5mm and you need to get it to 1mm on the edge, if you try to skive it all at once there is a lot of pressure and it will leave marks. Try skiving in stages. From 2.5 to 2.0, then 2.0 to 1.5 and then finally 1.5 to 1.0. good luck! p50
